Twilight Saga: VAMPIRES have killed off boy wizards in the battle for the imaginations of Aussie kids.

* More kids prefer to watch, read Twilight
* Only 28 per cent name Potter as Favourite
* Twilight's Kristen Stewart has Aussie roots

VAMPIRES have killed off boy wizards in the battle for the imaginations of Aussie kids.

The popularity of supernatural bloodsuckers has eclipsed old favourite Harry Potter, with children eagerly awaiting the release next Thursday of the second movie in the wildly successful Twilight series, New Moon.

A survey of 2692 Australians aged 12-18 found 55 per cent said they would prefer to read a Twilight book rather than one about Hogwarts' wiz kid. Half said they would rather watch a Twilight film over a Potter movie.

Only 15 per cent of the teens said they had not devoured a book or film from the vampire franchise by author Stephanie Myer, the survey by teen online virtual world Habbo revealed.

More than a quarter of the most passionate fans said they had watched the first Twilight flick on DVD or read the book more than 10 times.

Just 28 per cent nominated JK Rowling's creation Harry Potter as their favourite.

Almost seven in 10 teens surveyed said they planned to see New Moon at the cinema, with a devoted 30 per cent saying they would go to a midnight screening to be among the first fans to critique the film. Proving vampire Edward Cullen, played by global heart throb Robert Pattinson, has a legion of older female fans, 61 per cent of the teens' parents said they had watched the first Twilight film.

For author Stephanie Meyer, 2008 was the year of the vampire, with sales of 29 million Twilight books pushing her earnings to $54 million and making her the biggest-selling author of last year.

Over half have read all four Twilight books, and 63 per cent own a copy of the first film on DVD.
